John Couillard introduced our speaker Dr. Sheahon Zenger, the 21st president of Illinois Wesleyan University. John’s first contact with Zenger was 20 years ago when he was selected as Director of Athletics at ISU. Sheahon spent his early years in Kansas (Salina, Lawrence and Hayes – where he taught). His undergraduate was from Kansas State and his doctorate in Educational Policy and Leadership was earned from Kansas University. Following his time as Director of Athletics at ISU and KU, Sheahon went to the University of New Haven as Athletic Director and was named Interim President.
Dr. Zenger opened with how good it is to be back home. He went on to talk about his philosophy on learning. “Life is choices, humility, gratitude and work ethics.” He described his journey as “Life is what happens to you while you’re making plans.”
Sheahon praised Bloomington’s quality of life, saying the city is a true “American City” and he wants to keep this community what it is.
Illinois Wesleyan wants to be our “Community University.” It is the #1 Private Arts College in the Midwest. Every year 500, of the best of the best students attend IWU.
